Even (even?) iets anders…. quilting the day away

Ik ben iets aan het doen waarvan ik geroepen heb dat ik er noooooit aan zou beginnen! Ik bedoel maar, als je een naaimachine hebt ga je toch niet moeilijk zitten doen om met de hand te naaien. Nou.. jawel dus. En ik vind het nog leuk ook! Wat zeg ik: leuk? Het is behoorlijk verslavend. Het gaat ook zo snel en het resultaat is ook snel al leuk. Nu nog bedenken hoe of wat.
Hmm de bovenste foto waar de sterretjes op de salontafel liggen maakt wel een heel leuk plaatje. Zouden ze zulke stof ook hebben aan de meter? Voor de randen? Haha alsof ik al zover ben.. dat duurt nog wel even. Voorlopig ben ik lekker aan het stempelen (heerlijk, precieze lijntjes, geen gedoe met aftekenen alhoewel ik de stempels wel belachelijk aan de prijs vind maar dat terzijde). 

Even kijken hoever ik ben en of het nog steeds leuk is. Beetje schuiven, beetje rommelen, tussendoor even wat anders doen en huppekee, leg maar een lapje neer en er is altijd dezelfde kat die dat plekje uitzoekt om zich te nestelen…

Dear Jane… weer een paar

Gezellig! Die onderste heeft een paar keer kennis gemaakt met mijn tornmesje, brrr. Alhoewel, toch klopje op mijn schouder dat ik inderdaad verschillende keer een naadje heb uitgehaald omdat het niet naar mijn zin was. Over het algemeen denk ik: oh scheef, goh dat is vervelend. Maar ja, het zit al vast. Ik noem dat vooruitgang. Jawel.

A-8 Florence Nightingale. Niet zo moeilijk, wel erg rood. Ook eentje om opnieuw te doen dan?

Dear Jane… nog maar een paar dan?

Zo lief deze! Ben helemaal weg van het stipje. Ben er nog niet helemaal uit maar ik denk dat ik voor de tweede kleur toch maar elke keer wit gebruik. Denk ik.

 

Heb ik hier dus duidelijk niet gedaan. Zucht. Waarom moet je overal zo goed over nadenken vantevoren? Pfff dat is niks voor mij dat blijkt wel.  Geen perfect puntjes ook nog niet. Andrelon waar ben je als ik je nodig heb? Deze moet over. Ook omdat de kleuren lekker botsen. Ooit. Maar nu even niet.

Dear Jane… waar ben ik aan begonnen?

Mijn allereerste (les) quilt ligt al een poosje op de bank te hangen. Verplicht want sjonge hij is af! Vervolgens natuurlijk panisch op zoek naar een nieuw project. Begonnen aan een rood-blauwe log cabin voor op ons bed, want bed is enorm dus log cabin want dat gaat snel. Jawel. Ben ergens blijven steken omdat het toch niet helemaal die Zweedse look had die ik voor ogen heb. Enne… rechte stukkies aan elkaar stikken valt ook niet mee eigenlijk. Wat een muts ben ik. Enfin, die hangt dus voor zover braaf aan mijn “design wall” (lees: oud flanellen laken opgehangen aan de muur).

Goed. Wat nu?

Ik had in een opwelling zo’n leuke kleurenstaal gekocht. Daar ging ik placemats van maken! Wat een reuze goed idee! Al die kleurtjes pasten zo leuk bij elkaar, stof genoeg, overzichtelijk projectje dus wat houdt me tegen?
Nou, het feit dat er toch nog wat stofjes misten zoals een achtergrond kleurtje, een hele lichte en een hele donkere. Aangezien ik ontdekt heb dat ik een kleuren kneus ben was dat nog niet makkelijk en ik mocht van mezelf geen nieuwe stof kopen. Foei. Mag niet! Er hangen inmiddels diverse blokken en blokjes op het prikbord. Aan de andere kant van het kamertje. (De zweedse en de nog geen placemats kijken elkaar vriendelijk aan).

Goed. Wat nu?

Gezellig dagje weg met vriendin, quilts kijken ergens, viel een beetje tegen, dan maar op zoek naar winkeltjes. Ergens in mijn achterhoofd al een poosje gecharmeerd van de Farmers Wife quilt, of eh, Sylvia’s Bridal Sampler. Allemaal leuk, en eigenlijk prima voor mijn gauw verveelde hoofd, vind er niks aan om voortdurend dezelfde blokken te maken met dezelfde kleuren (hallooooo zweedse quilt!). Zowel de Farmers Wife als Sylvia bestaan uit verschillende blokjes, sampler quilts dus.
Maar ja, die blokjes zijn wel klein! Eng, want behalve ongeduldig, gauw verveeld, luie perfectionist en niet zo precies ben ik ook geen frutsel. (Ken je die kleine geduldspelletjes met zo’n balletje dat langs allerlei gaatjes moet om bij het eindpunt aan te komen? Die vliegen bij mij binnen 2 minuten door de kamer).

Dus.

Hadden ze in dat winkeltje een hele boekenplank vol met quiltboeken. Koop ik een boek. Geen Farmers Wife, Geen Sylvia’s Bridal Sampler, nee ik koop het Dear Jane boek.

Want die blokjes zijn nóg kleiner!

Tuurlijk! Goed plan Baking!

Kleuren waren makkelijk dacht ik. Ik had namelijk een poosje geleden al een stapeltje leuke stofjes aangeschaft (uitverkoopje) en nogal verliefd op de aqua-rood-wit combinatie dus dat ging hem worden. (Zie je dat groene blokje hierboven? Dat bedoel ik). Ik word af en toe zo moe van mezelf! Ben dus braaf begonnen met aqua… en rood… wit en een toetsje groen. Joh dat knalt toch van elkaar af!! Heel vreselijk op die kleine blokjes. Heb er een beetje zachtere kleurtjes bijgekocht en de stapel heftige aqua maar even weggelegd op advies van zeer kleurknappe vriendin.

En nu weet ik het niet meer. Ik ga gewoon maar verder en zie wel waar het schip strandt. Mag ik erbij zeggen dat ik heel bang ben dat het schip heel gauw strandt? En dat ik mezelf dan weer vreselijk op mijn kop ga geven?

Deze heeft een beetje klem gezeten trouwens, hij is niet scheef dat lijkt maar zo.

Baby it’s cold outside!

 

The making of.

Not the baby itself, my sister took care of that and did a great job ;-)

One day my Mom called and asked me if I would like to help her make smallest grandson a winter jacket. Sure!

Do you have any idea as to what kind of jacket or the color it should be? Turned out she had specific ideas… very specific!
It had to be a classic pea coat, fastened with the wooden and cord things (no clue how those are called in English; in Dutch it’s simply known as a “houtje-touwtje” sluiting). The color was already picked as well: navy blue or maybe hunters green. As I said; classic.  (Edit to say I know how it’s called in English: a toggle coat!! Yay me!)
Would I please take care of looking for fabric and lining, and then maybe we could sew together? As you can see by the end result above and below I acquitted myself nicely of finding just the right color fabric.  LOL!

No sooner said than done… off I went; that same afternoon found me in the fabric shop, testing, feeling and brooding over my choices. I was a bit early in season as the winter fabric weren’t all in store yet, and furthermore I had to take into account that we were talking about a baby, he doesn’t need any hefty fabric to weigh him down. Still I wanted a nice warm quality, for a good price (you never know how the end result will be, it’s been some time since I made baby clothing and I didn’t want to toss a huge amount of money).

The ladies in the store were a great help, they loved the idea and walked the isles with me, very nice! As you can see I settled on a medium grey wool with a nice drape and still warm and soft to the touch. Not navy blue, not hunters green no. There wasn’t any so that is my excuse and I stick with that. What might have helped deciding was the fact that the moment I walked into the store I spotted this light grey cotton fabric with the vintage Volkswagon print in bright red, blue and green!!!

The next day a quick stop at the notions shop for the buttons… nowhere to be found! Luckily I had the perfect size wooden buttons in my stash and just bought some vivid green piping band. Loaded the car with sewing machine, sewing caddy, fabric, lining and batting and off to my parents house, entered the house at 1.30 and after a quick cup of coffee the following proceeded:

 

 

   

 

We drew the pattern, cut the fabrics, set up two sewing machines across from each other and started sewing! Soon the lining and batting were attached and sewn into an inner jacket by Mom, meanwhile I made the pockets and sewed up the outer jacket, topstitched, added a label. Then Dad, Mom and I had dinner, and got back to sewing quickly after that. Already added piping to the hood and the pockets but adding piping to the sleeves was a daunting task. I forgot how small these sleeve openings are! Phew!!

We still left the buttons out because the cord part was still missing. Tried all kinds of different options, I had some leather shoelaces to try but we both didn’t like the look of it. Then Mom got out her sewing caddy stuffed with years of home economics ;-) never opened in recent years….. and there it was! A same vivid green leather like cord of just the right size and length!  Added the buttons, sewed the patches and it was ready to be wrapped up as a present for Li’l Sis!

 

Turns out we gauged the size a little on the large side… but the only thing you can be sure of with babies is that they grow fast! We both hope he’ll grow into it soon (and preferrably in the right season haha).
Hmm look at this here! The smallest grandson and a bigger one together!

Decisions… new quilt top

      
I thought this was a no brainer… My new (second ever) quilt was going to be for our bed. A rather daunting task in size because our bed is quite big (1.80cm x2.10cm /71”x83”).
Decided on the fabric; blues and soft reds trying for a Swedish mood.
Decided on the blocks: log cabin, not paper pieced (flip and stitch) just some easy chain work on the sewing machine…
Decided on the width of the strips, rotary cut the first couple of fat quarters…
By the time I had arrived there I patted myself on the back. Now the fun could begin, this was going to be a quick one! Little did I know.

I already started sewing the first blocks really liking what I saw emerging from my sewing machine. Until I found that the first beginner mistake was already there. Can you spot it? I accidentally started with the first row of the darker color on the wrong side… (First picture) I am not going to unpick these. Telling myself I’m still learning.
Well learn I do! I never thought about placement of the blocks, let alone making a design on paper.. So when I finished the first 7 blocks I noticed it would come in handy that I knew where and how I was going to place those red squares… So I went online searching for ideas… WRONG! So many choices, so many great ideas, so many possibilities!
Wouldn’t it be nice to make heart shape in the center? Counted squares and made red dark/dark squares plus the red/light blue I needed. Hmm looks more like a fox head than a heart. Maybe a centered heart smack in the middle of our bed is a little tacky?
Maybe off center? A little bit down and on the side might be less in your face?





Or…  I could go with the diamond shape and alter red and blue stripes? Like this (of course there are the red/red squares already made that must find a place somewhere). Thankfully I already decided that I don’t like the diagonal lines so they are out of the equation. So; heart is out, solely diagonals are out. I’m going for the star in the center!


Star in the center it is! Red/red squares taken care of and being used in the final design. Now… what am I going to do with the rest? Diamonds around the star as shown in the pic on top of the page? Or positioning the others as shown in the pic above?
My gosh why didn’t someone tell me this was so hard and confusing? To make future choices even more confusing I ordered this from the Contented Cat! Quiltmaker’s 100 blocks volume 4 and 5 plus a fabric marking pencil. Great service, lovely help, quick ordering. Thanks Joyce!

What I’ve been up to lately

Judging by the absence here  you’d say not much…

Agreed I didn’t bake as much as I used to but I find that my family’s busy schedules take them away from lunching/dining at home and I hate to see my fresh baked bread going to waste.

Then I took up on a new hobby  and that’s been eating away at my time as well. I have been sewing for years, ever since the boys were born. Sewing for little boys is fun and rewarding but that stops rather abruptly when they grow up. I don’t think they would want me to sew their chinos, jeans or sweaters.. So mainly I sew for me. Mostly I love doing that and I think I’d like to show more here but that would involve taking pictures of me wearing my me-made stuff! Yikes. Need to take that hurdle. Or maybe not.

So that’s garments I make.

The new sewing related hobby was born from seeing the waste of fabric. Those bits and pieces of left over fabric… too small or too awkward to sew something else and my thrifty mind thinks them too big to throw out.
That made me think quilts.
Started on my own, knowing nothing at all. Then took a class…. got hooked… I love to play with fabric, love to learn how to look different at fabric, learn to be daring with colors, step out of my comfort zone.

I started on a quilt for my sisters newborn and with what I know now I think I have to make her another one, a proper one. *shudders* Below it’s in its unfinished state. It’s all done now and her oldest is having fun with it so I hear, cuddling with it on the couch and using it for indoor pick nicks.

We made a sampler quilt in class, it’s not finished yet, blocks and sashings are in place, still need to attach the borders and then of course the padding and back and then the dreaded quilting itself…. Indecisive whether it’s going to be hand quilted or machine quilted. Again not a recent pic (sashings are done now).

The first picture in this post are potholders I made for one of the ladies in the quilt group. We try to keep it up and meet off class every once in a while. So far it’s been so much fun to do this together.

And because I have a scattered mind I already started on something new,  a very ambitious project; making a quilt for our bed. Our bed is huge. But.. I can at least try!? It’s going to be all log cabin in blue and red and I’m trying to get a Scandinavian feel to it. Or that’s the plan. We’ll see where we go.

Burnt orange skirt / rok 20 Knip November 2011

Working on this skirt (Knip no. 20, november 2011) in a bouclé or almost felted wool. Rather heavy fabric but very easy to work with, even on the curved seams.

These pics are showing the front panel only, back panel is ready to have the zipper installed (center back zipper). Debating on the color… rummaging through my stash I found a plethora of zippers in all sizes and colors but none even close to this color of course. I think I will use an invisible zipper which I think is easier to install and with this fabric I don’t want any extra bulk added. The one that comes closest  is a neutral khaki one. Not sure yet whether I’m going to use that or try and find one that’s more orangey. (Don’t even know if they exist).

Hier ben ik nu mee bezig, rok no. 20 uit de November Knip. Het gaat lekker vlot, die wollen bouclé is prettig om mee te werken, er zit net genoeg rek in om die ronde naden mooi te krijgen. Maar nu.. alleen het achterpand heeft een tailleband, voorkant blijft zonder. Dacht ik slim te zijn en die tailleband achter lekker weg te laten. Ik bedoel maar, wie heeft er behoefte aan een extra bobbel op de bips? Ik niet. Dus ipv de tailleband apart te knippen liet ik het stuk lekker aan het heupdeel zitten. Tot ik de zijnaden even ging spelden om te passen.
Tsja… dan loopt die bovenste naad natuurlijk mooi over in de tailleband… en de naad daaronder in de naad van het heupdeel achter. Weet nog niet wat ik ga doen, tóch die tailleband knippen en eraan zetten of zo laten? Ik zou evt nog een sierstiksel op het achterpand kunnen zetten om een overloop te suggereren, is dat een idee?
Dan nog even de voering (om de een of andere duistere reden heb ik toch zó’n hekel aan voering inzetten in een rok!)

And then there’s the question: to waistband or not to waistband? In this pattern only the back panel has one. Looked a little odd to me on the line drawing but when I pinned the side seams together for the fitting it occurred to me that the seam on the little triangle on the hip will line up with the back waist band…. as well as the lower seam will line up with the upper back panel….
Right.
The instructions tell you to cut a separate waistband (waistband and back panel are one in the drawing) and I thought I was smarter and just leave it attached. I mean who needs another bulky seam on their behinds? Not me!
Perhaps I should have listened. I can still cut a separate waistband, no problem. Undecided. Yet. Hmm.

New fabric!

Started this grey and rainy Thursday morning with an introduction Pilates class (ouch!) and went home all energized. Vacuumed the second floor, rearranged the “study”, all our administration from my sewing room (yay! I have a sewingroom now. Need to make pics.) back to the study again.  I need the space the ordners take up in the sewing room after all. Thought it was a good idea to have it all together within easy access so we could pay bills and file away all that paperwork right away.

Not going to happen. As it is, my work table is occupied by fabric and sewing machine and stuff. And… I ordered fabric online so that needs a place as well. This fabric came in the mail this morning! Makes me happy! (and a bit guilty because I am buying fabric without a project in mind…. but isn’t that a part of quilting as well. I believe they call it: “building a stash”.. Well I am building!

Happy! I needed a bit of happy because I got an inkling we have to move/remove the shed in our garden after all. I don’t want to think about it too much at the moment because the stupid, arrogant, ignorant city is making me cry and bash their heads against the wall at the same time.

Hmm, that sounds very much like I am actually working. Nice. Patch Work. Anyway, some time ago an idea started to take shape in my head and I took off on this supersecret project which I can’t discuss here because the person receiving this might be reading along and the proceedings weren’t much to my liking.
What I really thought was something along the lines of: well how hard can it be? You cut some squares from different fabrics and then you’ll sew them all together again in a different order. Pah. I can do that. First started out with my fabric scissors.. hmm.. can’t this go quicker and more precise? So I asked and got myself a self healing mat (I like that word) and a rotary cutter for my birthday. Nice!  But it needs some getting used to. No really. And there are tricks. And rules.
Turns out there are all kinds of tricks and rules. Because when you’re done rotary cutting (straight lines girls, and straight lines are hard!)  then you find out that that old fabric that you had is not the best for a beginner. Stretchy denim anyone? Not good. Upholstery quality fabric? Not good. Well I suppose it can be done and I did it but easy and beginner worthy it is not. Then with that experience under my belt I started on the secret project. Using all cotton this time. But all cotton is not equal I found. Some cotton is a looser weave. And it will warp while sewed.
I huffed and puffed and read loads of stuff online, how to’s, tutorials, went to the library, you name it I read it. (Well, a lot anyway). Then I debated for a little while and finally allowed myself a quilting class. So that is what you see here. This is going to be a sampler quilt, learning different techniques along the way.



Choosing fabric or rather colors is a whole new subject on itself. Boy that is HARD!
I wanted this to be something I would really use and see. So I thought I’d use purple and green because our livingroom is all shades of grey and I am currently in love with bright green and purple accents. Think grape hyacinth purple and green. Something like this.
I don’t think I got what I had in mind. I was a bit intimidated by the choice of fabrics in the quilt store and the teacher helped me get fabrics together. When she showed me her pick I thought okay, let’s do that, but I am not so sure about the result. I think a beginner is allowed her first quilt to be not so great but that is something that I have some trouble with. I need everything to be right from the start. Yeah, I like being hard on myself. (those pesky points need to line up exactly… aargh!! I am so impatient, I want to see results! Can’t use that here.. Teacher said that it is about the journey as well, not about being there. I think I need that as my mantra.
I found I like patchworking. I love it. Especially since we did two blocks of paper piecing! Love it!
I thought I’d let you know. There are some more blocks ready but not photographed yet. Will keep you informed. About the journey. Not the result. :-D

Star fruit pillow and thinking about a sewing room/office

Just some random thoughts....

Made this one some time ago, still in love with the colors and I thought it would fit into the color scheme I am thinking of using in my soon to be dream sewing room/office space. I would really like to use aqua/red/tan.

Already tan/taupe curtains in place and the wooden floor is painted a grayish blue.
So what's with the green in this pillow? Green is out of the color scheme!

I need to think some more. About the size of the table (room is tiny and I need space for two to sew. Either one setting for my locker or when my friend and I have our weekly sewing session). Will be continued. I hope.

Een plas water, een vreemd stofje {Jurk Knip Oktober 14, 2011}

  Aargh!! Ik kwam vanmorgen uiterst vroeg (voor een maandag, herfst vakantie, niet-werkdag) naar beneden en zag 1 kat op de eettafel, 1 kat net weglopen….
Niet goed. En ja hoor, voor de zoveelste keer hebben “ze” een vaas omgegooid! (Of eentje ervan? Ik kom er nooit achter of het een gezamenlijke krachtsinspanning is of dat er maar één de boel omgooit en de ander gewoon komt snuffelen).
Geloof me, er is niets zo irritant om als niet-ochtendmens je woonkamer binnen te lopen en gelijk te moeten dweilen, losse blaadjes rapen, vloeken op de katten, allerlei druipende spullen weg te moeten halen.  Ik gebruik bewust al geen ranke slanke hoge vazen meer :-( maar grote zware vazen met een minimale hoeveelheid water… Het maakt allemaal niet uit. ‘s Nachts kunnen ze niet in de kamer maar dit is dus in de tijd tussen vertrek van echtgenoot en oudste zoon en mijn binnenkomst. Vijf minuten? Zoon heeft gewoon de deur open laten staan en huppekee. Zo’n boeket blijft er altijd een beetje verminkt uitzien dat vind ik nog het ergst.
De tassenbodems hangen te drogen… die tas wilde toch al niet wat ik wilde. Kan ik nog even denken hoe nu verder.
De jurk. Ik zie nu pas op de foto dat het lijkt alsof de stof op zijn kop zit! (Ben ik de enige die de krantenkoppen kan lezen haha). Maar nee, dit is een heel vreemd stofje, het lijkt een beetje stugge stretchstof, maar het voelt als een rib; er zit echt een vleug in die ik braaf gevolgd heb. Had ook gezien dat het patroon gewoon kris kras loopt maar zie nu pas op de foto dat ik het patroon zo keurig recht gelegd heb dat het bovenvoorpand naadloos overloopt in de rok! Jakkes. Alle letters aan één kant.  Handig zo’n pop! 
Het model zit in een mum van tijd in elkaar, ik heb hem niet gevoerd maar had dat met deze stof wel moeten doen waarschijnlijk, het hángt een beetje aan je lijf/maillot. Was een beetje bang dat het dan te massief zou worden. Blinde rits middenachter, met de aantekening dat dit model best zonder kan mits van stevige jersey ofzo.
Wat ik érg prettig vond is dat het patroon er duidelijk rekening mee houdt (ruime arsmgaten!!) dat je er iets ónder draagt, een t-shirt met lange mouwen, misschien een pittige overhemd blouse (maar dan bij voorkeur níet zoals het model in de Knip het draagt met het bovenste knoopje gesloten en in dezelfde kleur zodat je de halslijn niet meer ziet). Ik weet niet wat dat is met die patroonbladen. Het lijkt wel of ze er plezier in hebben de modellen zo te fotograferen dat je als argeloze naaister vooral niet kan zien hoe het zit. Handig.
Heb het jurkje gedragen met een witte longsleeve, maar ook met een –toevallig- dezelfde blauwgrijze kleur- tricot jasje! Mét blauwgrijze laarzen en een maillot in dezelfde kleur. Niet helemaal toevallig natuurlijk, had de laarzen en het jasje aan toen ik in de stoffenwinkel dit stofje tegenkwam. Score!
